2018, open duration – for brass trio (or variable ensemble) and drone

Untitled 4 was performed on January 29, 2018, by Trio Kobayashi (Allen Fogle, horn; Mattie Barbier, trombone; Luke Storm, tuba) and Tal Katz (cello). In the recording that resulted from that session, you hear two takes, edited and layered.

With a drone, the brass trio attempts to work their way through a map which guides the process of precisely tuning intervals of simple frequency ratios. The map is a variable system – the ensemble can choose to use any of the 10 provided versions (or another of their own devising), use any number of them in a given realization in any order, and may choose to follow different sets of rules for how one navigates through the map.
