String Quartet
2026, 12′ – dedicated to the Mivos Quartet
This piece is a sort of imaginary utopia in which certain (but certainly not all) essences of a style, at once historical and ever-present, are distilled and then given the blessing to flourish even further beyond the social restrictions of their time. My hope is that the inclinations of individual musical elements, like droplets in a rainstorm, double and triple on themselves into something that, in the mist, resembles a living being – elements that, in the words of Henri Focillon, “proliferate like some vegetable monstrosity… [tending] to invade space in every direction, to perforate it, to become as one with all its possibilities.”
String Quartet was first performed on May 28, 2026, at Atkinson Hall, UC San Diego, in San Diego, CA, by the Mivos Quartet (Olivia De Prato and Adam Woodward, violins; Victor Lowrie Tafoya, viola; Nathan Watts, cello).
Full score and recording coming soon.
