Neither and Both Rooms are
2015, 60′ – for three cellists, three percussionists, and six cassette players

Neither and Both Rooms are is an hour-long piece for two trios in two rooms. A trio of cellists is in one room while a trio of percussionists is in a second room down the hall. Each performer has a cassette player beside them which plays throughout the piece. On these cassettes are the previously recorded parts of the parallel player in the other room – for example, the first cellist’s cassettes play the recorded individual part of the first percussionist, and vice versa. While the “live” performers coordinate between each other, the parts as played on the cassette players go in and out of sync. Audience members are free to walk between the two rooms as they wish over the course of the piece.

Neither and Both Rooms are was performed on May 2, 2015 in Oberlin, OH by Hannah Kim, Jeremy Kreutz, and Aaron Wolff on cello; and Justin Gunter, Dan King, and Ben Rempel on percussion.
