Sometimes and Sometimes Not
2018 – album of five songs
Sometimes and Sometimes Not is an album of five recorded songs – four for “rock” instrumentation of guitar, bass, and drums and one for piano and cello (played by Helen Newby). Over the course of three trips up from LA I recorded everything primarily at my friends’ small recording studio – a converted toolshed – in back of their former home in North Oakland. These songs had their origins in demos I recorded at home more than a year before that. I devised rules for the album itself – e.g. their long length; the inclusion of a cyclical outro; the doubling and hard-panning of drums, guitars, and voice; the pseudo-symmetrical song order; etc. – that evolved into a set of tightly controlled songs somewhere in the rock tradition. A late-night session using the amps at Tiny Telephone Recording and cutting and pasting some original material from my home demos made this album what it came to be.
