Untitled 4
2018, open duration – for brass trio and drone

With a drone, a brass trio attempts to work their way through a map which guides the process of precisely tuning intervals of simple frequency ratios. The map is a variable system – the ensemble can choose to use any of the 10 provided versions (or another of their own devising), use any number of them in a given realization in any order, and may choose to follow different sets of rules for how one navigates through the map. The drone can act as a reference pitch for tuning but in fact – depending on the way the ensemble navigates – it more often functions as a 4th pitch very distant harmonically from the more harmonically related three pitches of the brass trio. Although I wrote this for the wonderful Trio Kobayashi (horn, trombone, and tuba), it can conceivably work with any 3 instruments or voices.

Untitled 4 was performed on January 29, 2018, by Trio Kobayashi (Allen Fogle, horn; Matt Barbier, trombone; Luke Storm, tuba) and Tal Katz (cello). In the recording that resulted from that session, you hear two takes, edited and layered. For both takes, the ensemble used map 2 out of 10, containing the intervals 3/2, 4/3, 8/3, 9/8, and 5/4.
